Operate Counter Balanced Lift Truck

Qualification Title: Operate Counter Balanced Lift Truck

The person credited with this Unit Standard is able to operate a counter-balanced lift truck in a safe manner. They will also be able to conduct pre and post inspections to ensure the performance of the lift truck. The person will be able to handle the loading and storage of freight by using the equipment and its accessories in the required manner. They will also be able to access emergency system and services in the event of an incident or accident.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

  • Applying the recognised methods for inspecting and recording the operational fitness of all components of the lift truck with reference to safety procedures in the workplace.
  • Identifying and classifying freight/loads taking into account documentation, packaging and labelling associated with the specific freight.
  • Handling, loading and storing freight in accordance with industry standards environmental requirements, and with due consideration to inter alia the commodities and their properties, storage area and placement of load.
  • Achieving maximum work performance of lifting equipment and attachments, by applying knowledge of equipment dimensions, controls, principles of operation and capacities, manufacturing specifications and circumstances in the working environment.
  • Operating equipment in accordance with laid down organisational and legislative standards and procedures as well as manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Accessing available emergency support system and services in case of incidents and accidents.

Learners accessing this qualification are assumed to be competent in:

  • Communication at NQF level 2
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 2

Operate Truck-Mounted Cranes

Qualification Title: Operate Truck-Mounted Cranes SAQA Qual ID: 242978 NQF Level: 3 Credits: 8

The person credited with this unit standard will be able to understand the functions of a truck mounted crane while using the crane in a safe and suitable manner. They will also be able to access support and emergency services in the case of an incident or accident in the workplace.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

  • Demonstrating knowledge of the functions of a truck mounted crane.
  • Identifying the safety and suitability of the crane.
  • Inspecting and recording the operational fitness of the components of the truck and crane.
  • Operating a truck mounted crane.
  • Accessing available support systems and emergency services in case of incidents and accidents.
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

Operate a Mobile Crane

Operate a Rigid Heavy Vehicle

Qualification Title: Operate a Rigid Heavy Vehicle SAQA Qual ID: 123253 NQF Level: 4 Credits: 15

The purpose of learning is to ensure safe, professional operation of rigid (no articulation points) heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3.5 tons. Credited learners can drive a specific type of rigid heavy vehicle in accordance with legal, safety, manufacturer and other relevant requirements and reflect on the manner in which the vehicle is operated. Competent drivers are able to preserve vehicles as assets, drive safely and defensively, and contribute significantly to the economy by transporting goods and/or passengers.

Credited learners are capable of:

  • Preparing a rigid heavy vehicle for road transport trips according to specification.
  • Driving a rigid heavy vehicle in accordance with specified requirements.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of road transport service quality.
  • Handling unexpected situations according to specified procedures.
  • Reflecting on rigid heavy vehicle performance and own operation of vehicle against requirements.

Parking rigid heavy vehicle in accordance with specified requirements.

Operate a Vehicle Combination

The purpose of learning is to ensure safe, professional operation of vehicle combinations with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3.5 tons, and consisting of a drawing vehicle and trailer/s. Credited learners can drive a specific vehicle combination in accordance with legal, safety, manufacturer and other relevant requirements and reflect on the manner in which the vehicle is operated.

Credited learners are capable of:

  • Preparing a vehicle combination for road transport trips according to specification.
  • Driving a vehicle combination in accordance with specified requirements.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of road transport service quality.
  • Handling unexpected situations according to specified procedures.
  • Parking vehicle combination in accordance with specified requirements.
  • Coupling and uncoupling a drawing vehicle and trailer/s according to specified procedures.
